THE Sanctity OF SHABBAT

The ritual of lighting candles signifies the welcoming of Shabbat to our homes, to both remember (זוכר) and observe (שומר).

They also represent the delight (עֹנֶג) of Shabbat, to bring

⋆˙⟡ light and joy ⟡˙⋆

to our lives.

Lighting the candles also welcomes Shabbat as a Queen or Bride to your table, bringing her gentle presence into your home. She represents our covenant with God and is honored like royalty to show how holy Shabbat truly is.

On Friday evening it’s traditional to sing “Lecha Dodi,” which includes the lines: “Come, my beloved, to greet the bride; we will receive the presence of Shabbat.”

In the final verse we turn around to welcome the queen of the day, “come bride, come bride.”

The meal served on Saturday night after Shabbat is called “Melaveh Malkah” or “escorting the queen” because we are the Shabbat Queen back to her resting place.
